Shroppie closed as Woodseaves collapses

Published: Friday, 14 January 2011

THE Shropshire Union Canal is closed as Woodseaves Cutting has collapsed closing the waterway today. (Friday)

A British Waterways foreman, investigating the fall, told Lisa, of Canal & Country Holidays Afloat Ltd that there is rock, soil and trees in the waterway making passage impossible, and so it is officially closed.

Not affected

Richard Hall tells us that no way is the towpath affected even if the rest of the rock (shown in the second of his pictures) comes down, which he believes is a bit of British Waterways OTT with Health & Safety!

Neither is the navigation actually impassible, as a boat came through this morning, but again it is a safety measure.

Not Tyrley cutting

Just for the record it isn't Tyrley Cutting, that is North of the locks, it is Woodseaves Cutting, and the fall is between bridges 56 & 57 and not as given on Waterscape.

Our grateful thanks to Richard Hall who tramped to the fall and back to get the pictures.
