Brimscombe Port again

IT WAS in 2003 that plans for development at Brimscombe Port on the Cotswold Canals were first raised, and have been put forward yet again.

The development is part of the project to restore the waterway, but came to nothing when British Waterways withdrew from the canal restoration in 2008, Alan Tilbury reports.

Create 400 jobs

The proposals are for flats and houses, commercial properties and an hotel which we are told would create 400 jobs.

However, there is no developer for this project which is being promoted by Stroud District Council, that hopes to gain outline planning permission later this year.

The six miles of derelict waterway which runs between Brimscombe and Stonehouse is considered an important area of cultural heritage which Thrupp Parish Council hopes to preserve and protect wildlife, wanting nesting sites for birds and a habitat for otters to be included.
