BRITISH Waterways has officially recognised the outstanding work the Shropshire Union Canal Society has done over the years.

It acknowledges that its work has 'dramatically benefited the waterway',  and so next Thursday (27th January) will be making a Volunteer Recognition Award presentation to the society.

The picture shows members of the society fixing mooring bollards for visiting boats, whilst the one below shows  just one of the many picnic areas the society has created with moorings by the side of the Shropshire Union Canal.

This award is not only to acknowledge the continued hard work enhancing the Shropshire Union and Llangollen canals, but its work on the restoration of the Montgomery Canal.

North Wales & Borders Waterway Manager Wendy Capelle enthused:

"It's an appropriate time to place on record our gratitude to the dedication of the group and for their continued hard work with the work parties on the Montgomery Canal, their fund raising and events for the restoration funds and their work along the Shropshire Union and Llangollen Canals."

Robin Evans, British Waterways Chief Executive remarked:

"There are a great number of passionate and enthusiastic people volunteering for waterways and they make a massive contribution.  We really value all volunteers and particularly the many societies, associations and clubs who are our partners in so many important and useful projects."
