90 years later...
IT WAY WAY back in 1934 that the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath Tramway Wharf was abandoned.
But the efforts of the members of the Shropshire Union Canal Society have, after 90 years, restored this section to water, Janet Friend reports.
Just a few years ago, like other parts of the canal, it was difficult to see where the actual waterway was, but now it is back in water at Crickheath.
The restoration was brought in quicker than was expected and under budget too, the society claim.
Luckily, when the canal was closed it was done so as a remainder waterway and so was part of the system, meaning it could eventually be restored.
Eventually, with the work of the members it will be completely restored.
And then the waterway will be complete from where it joins the Llangollen Canal at Frankton to Newtown, a distance of 33 miles. The picture of the restored section by courtesy of the Shropshire Union Canal Society.
