LOW WATER HAS CLOSED even more pounds on the Kennet & Avon Canal
One following the other
With one stoppage following the other, Keith Gudgin reports.
The first stoppage caused by low water was the pound from Lock 67 to Lock 68.
Our being told the lack of rain caused the problem.
Then later the same day, yesterday, Wednesday, came notice of this stoppage being extended to now include the pounds from Longmans Cottage Lock 62 to Kintbury Lock 78, this including a further 15 pounds that are now closed to navigation.
The reason
The reason given is the same, stating the summer's hot weather and lack of rain means that our charity is doing all we can to save water and transfer the flow that's available to the right places on the network to meet demand.
It adding that the Met Office has said that parts of England have seen the longest unbroken spell of no recorded rainfall this century.
