HAVING viewed your article about the eviction of a lone, vulnerable woman living on a boat in Bath a couple of points come to mind, writes Julie Bedell.

CaRT it appears is in a cleft stick, if it does not enforce its rules it is wrong, if it does it is wrong, regardless of how you interrupt the rules.

Not a housing society

CaRT is not a housing society, hostel or a housing agency. Social services perhaps should have been involved, but is that for CaRT to decide? Maybe whoever decided to block the Cut to prevent seizure of the boat would have served the lady better by helping her to the local authority for temporary accommodation or even giving her a bed for a night or two .

We have met Corinne on several occasions since she took on this job. [Corinne Rotherham is the CaRT Enforcement Officer who was present] Our home canal for winter is the Kennet & Avon, we have even called Corrine on one occasion to ask if we could overstay for two days , due to a sick pet needing return vet visits.

Found her approachable

We have found her approachable, articulate , firm but likeable. I've known her 'keep an eye out' for more than one person with a drink dependency problem, share a coffee with them have a chat and listen. Corinne will do her job to the best of her ability, and I'm sure would have explored all avenues, prior to seizure of the boat in question.

I am exceeding sorry for this lady, but it appears that she has slipped through another hole in the system, hopefully once the correct agency is involved she will get the help she requires .
