PAST paintings often show boats on the canals that are far from being like the ones we now see, but here is one that seemingly defies explanation.
Richard Davies tells us he was interested to see the picture of a gondola, and has an old painting, dated 1888, that shows something similar to a gondola being towed through a deep cutting,

The painting shows the boat, with similar lines to a gondola, but obviously powered, with Richard asking if anyone has a clue what it is.
