THE work to repair Elland Bridge that spans the Calder & Hebble Navigation is still in progress, with the lifting of the pre-cast arch sections taking place from next week-end.

Whilst this is being carried out the waterway will be closed to navigation between 10am and 4pm each day, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Lifted by crane

The sections will be lifted and positioned by crane, with metal rods holding them into position whilst mortar is applied to secure the arches.

It is stated that the 'contractors will lift the arch sections by crane every day between 26th  September and 2nd October'.

No boat passage

No reason is given as to why the contractor will lift the arches every day. However, for safety reason no boat passage will be allowed between 10am and 4pm each day, whilst the arches are lifted into position and the metal rods are removed.

The bridge was severely damaged by the floods in November last year and is being rebuilt.
