THERE is one river that could really do with the services of River Canal Rescue, (RCR) and that is the Hull in the East Riding, that is littered with sunken vessels.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council had identified around 20 sunken boats causing obstructions in the river and it was decided by the then River Hull Advisory Board that they be removed, supporting plans adopted in July 2015 to increase the flow of the river and help manage flood risk in the local area, with RCR getting the contract.
Removed
The two boats causing the most obstruction were removed on Monday (19th September) with a programme being devised to remove the other boats in the future.
However these can only be removed between June and September as otherwise they would disturb the lampreys, a protected species of fish which live in the river.
Using local businesses
Stephanie Horton, Managing Director of River Canal Rescue, commented:
"We are delighted to assist in bringing this project to fruition; we are also using local businesses to support the salvage operations and hope that as we move forward with the clearing of the river, it will benefit the local community in many ways."
In 2015, RCR undertook 115 salvage and emergency rescues.
