War-time causeway to go

PUSHING forward with the restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal, the next step in the removal of a causeway that was built over the waterway in war-time.

The causeway was constructed in 1942 as part of the Dunsfold Airfield, that in its place replaced a bridge that spanned the canal, Alan Tilbury tells us.

The new road

The airfield in part of Dunsfold Park that is working with Wey & Arun Canal Trust, together with Waverley and Surrey councils to examine how to carry out the work. With the plan being to construct a new bridge alongside the causeway, with the bridge then becoming the new road ensuring minimal traffic disruption.

This would open up over a mile of new waterway, and at the same time allow further restoration in the future. This depends on funds being raised by the Trust and planning permission being granted for the work.
