THE FRANKTON BREACH MYSTERY SOLVED—CRT Pinpoint El Niño as primary culprit. By Alan Yates.
Boaters marooned on the Llangollen Canal following the recent culvert breach near Frankton Locks can finally rest easy. The Canal & River Trust (CRT) has officially ruled out lack of routine maintenance, neglected tree roots or deferred structural repairs as the cause of the leak.
The true villain?
Instead, top hydrological analysts have identified the true villain: a particularly passive-aggressive El Niño event currently unfolding thousands of miles away in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Explained a CRT spokesperson:
"It is a classic misdirection to blame self-seeded tree roots penetrating a 200-year-old clay pipe culvert. While visually it may appear that a decade of unmanaged vegetation growth penetrated the pipe, our climate models clearly demonstrate a direct atmospheric butterfly effect originating off the coast of Peru."
Targeted the embankment
According to the trust, Pacific sea-surface temperature anomalies created localised barometric pressure shifts that specifically targeted the structural integrity of the embankment at Frankton via lack of rain.
When pressed on whether routine inspection or aggressive root clearance over the last decade might have prevented the structure from giving way, the spokesperson was firm:
"A chainsaw and plastic pipe liners are no match for global macro-meteorological forces. Suggesting that clearing trees from canal banks prevents culverts from failing ignores the complex, interconnected nature of global weather patterns."
