Derby Canal decision soon

THERE is to be a decision soon as to whether the restoration of the Derby Canal can go ahead—funds providing.

As the waterway runs through the boundaries of  three different authorities—South Derbyshire District, Derby City and Amber Valley Borough Councils—all have to determine separate applications covering the area of the waterway, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Well underway

These are now well underway, but 'further planning considerations' need to be resolved, and the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust, that is behind the £45m project, expects a decision  within the next few months.

The Trust hopes to restore the length between Sandiacre and Swarkestone. And though most of the original line  has been filled in, the route is clearly visible, some as paths.

The aim is to have the waterway re-opened by 2021.
