ANOTHER BRIDGE THAT SUFFERS from vehicle impacts is the Stone Chimney Bridge over the Lancaster Canal.

StoneChimneyBridgeStruck eleven times

It being told that it has been struck no less that 11 times in the past few years, costing a vast amount of money to repair.

With so many strikes this surely shows a need for an automatic camera, as then the culprits can be brought to book, and having to cover the cost of repair.

This particular canal has its fair share of vehicle strikes, most bridges being at acute right angles and taking drivers by surprise.

Canal & River Trust tell that it has had to pay out £500,000 to repair this bridge after two vehicle strikes over the past two years. Image by Canal & River Trust.

Suffers more collisions

Bill Froggatt, the trust’s heritage advisor, explained:

“Humpback bridges such as these are an iconic part of Britain’s canal network. However, due to the large number of rural, narrow roads crossing the Lancaster Canal, its bridges suffer more collisions than anywhere else in the country.

“The most recent strike on Stone Chimney Bridge caused significant structural damage to the masonry, which once again requires vital conservation and repair work."
