A PROTEST HAS BEEN HELD against the large amount of weed clogging-up the waterways.
The protest is against the weed in the Fossdyke and Witham Navigations that are choked, Janet Friend reports.
Navigation is impossible
Both boaters and anglers gathered in Lincoln to object to the condition of the two waterways where navigation is impossible in many places.
Members of Burton Waters Boat Club, which organised the gathering at the Brayford Pool on Saturday, told they pay 'significant' licence fees to the Canal & River Trust but saw little maintenance in return.
The boaters also called for the waterways to be dredged so they remained navigable and remarked vegetation on the banks needed to be cut back. The image is of Brayford Pool as it is at present.
Pennywort growing
It is told that there is a metre and a half of pennywort weed growing up from the bottom between Burton Waters and the Brayford Pool, that making navigation impossible.
Canal & River Trust explained it understood that weed was frustrating for people wanting to enjoy the navigation but telling that with a warming climate and nutrient-rich water entering from drainage channels and neighbouring land, the river provides ideal growing conditions for fast-growing weed.
