IT WAS WEDNESDAY that once again the Royal Oak Swing Bridge 40 had a barrier smashed by a vehicle.
Yet yesterday, Thursday, it had been repaired, Keith Gudgin reports.
But of course the vehicle driver was quickly well away from the scene on the Macclesfield Canal and Canal & River Trust left to foot the bill.
Automatic cameras
At one time there was the suggestion of having automatic cameras on swing and lift bridges that have their barriers smashed, but it was not implemented.
Yet here is a prime example that a camera would pay for itself time and time again by catching the culprits breaking barriers, for looking back through our 'Search' feature, from April last year the swing bridge was out of action six times!
The problem is that this swing bridge is on a corner around the Royal Oak Pub, so though there is a warning for drivers, many obviously ignore it, smashing into the barrier with a new one then having to be fitted.
