Lock keepers' cottage saved
DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL had plans to 'dispose' of a Victorian lock keeper's cottage on Tiverton's Grand Western Canal.
But this has been removed from the council's disposals list after objections, Janet Friend reports.
It was to dispose of the cottage known as The Moorings, but objections and the large amount of money that was needed to improve it caused a change of mind.
Adverse impact
Colin Slade, Chairman of the Grand Western Canal Joint Advisory Committee, told he was very aware of the concerns of committee members and local residents about the adverse impact this could have on the canal ranger service.
Adding that the removal of the building would have a very detrimental effect on the award-winning country park and a loss to the people of Tiverton.
The property is currently used as a meeting room for the canal ranger service, offices, a meeting room and two classrooms.
There are also moorings for work boats and sea cadet boats. Image by Devon County Council.
