Ashby Canal attraction repairs cost doubled
WATER LEAKING into Moira Furnace has caused a now estimated £490,000 worth of damage, virtually doubled from the original estimate of £225,000
This popular attraction on the Ashby Canal has had water leaking through its roof and walls North West Leicestershire District Council relate.
The Moira Furnace, that is situated in parkland by the Ashby Canal in Moira, was built to make iron but is now home to a museum.
A report into the damage caused by the water is making the continuing use of the main museum area 'unsustainable' the Local Democracy Reporting Service discovered.
Started process
However, the council has started the process of agreeing works on the attraction with Historic England, which needs to sign-off the cost of repairs.
All consents are now in place, the authority states, but inflation had pushed the original cost of repairs up from £225,000 to £490,000.
No date has been given for the start of the work, with the building closed until work is completed and made safe.
