Storm Darragh fallen trees not cleared until next year
SO MANY trees were blown over blocking waterways that they will not be cleared until the new year!
Contractors have been working over the whole system clearing the trees that fell into and over the waterways by the winds of Storm Darragh in early December. Keith Gudgin reports.
Worst effected
One of the worst canals affected is the Grand Union Canal below Catherine de Barnes, with multiple fallen trees blocking the waterway.
Both the navigation and towpath are still closed on the waterway between Damson Parkway Bridge 78A and Hampton Lane Bridge 78, as a result of multiple fallen trees with many in a dangerous position.
Canal & River Trust tell that contractors have made an initial start on clearing the fallen trees. However, due to the large number of windblown trees in the area, more specialized equipment is needed to complete the work.
Additionally, access through a farmer’s field is required to facilitate the removal.
Arranging for clearance
Contact details have been obtained for the third-party landowner and the trust is in the process of arranging for the clearance of the multiple fallen trees.
However, it is unlikely the navigation will be fully cleared until the new year, as contractors are currently addressing other navigational blockages caused by the recent storm.
