Consultation on the future of the Grand Western Canal
A CONSULTATION started today, Monday 22nd July on the future of Devon's Grand Western Canal.
This will run until Monday 16th September—a period of eight weeks—recognising opportunities for what is a conservation area, Trevor Mapstone reports.
Drop-in event
Mid Devon District Council have organised a drop-in event in Phoenix House, starting tomorrow,Tuesday, July 23 from 2pm until 5pm. Officers will be present to answer any questions about the document that has been produced outlining the future management of the Conservation Area and the changes proposed.
A member of the council commented:
“The canal is a real asset to Mid Devon, to those who live here and those who come from miles around to enjoy its beauty. We know, therefore, it’s important we have a robust plan to protect the area and preserve its unique setting and we want the public to be part of that plan.”
All comments received within the consultation period will be carefully considered to help us to finalise the Conservation Area and Management Plan before it is adopted by the council. Once adopted, the Conservation Area and Management Plan will be used in the process of determining planning applications and for implementing management proposals.
Extends for 11 miles
The Grand Western Canal extends for 11 miles from its basin in Tiverton, through the villages of Halberton, Sampford Peverell, and Burlescombe, to the hamlet of Lowdwells, close to the Somerset border.
The canal is in water and is navigable, with narrowboats, cruisers and a horse drawn narrowboat giving trips on this most scenic canal.
