Why not just get on with it?

IT WAS contributor T. Lang who suggested that Canal & River Trust had an Excuse Department, writes Tom Crossley.

From the ever continuing excuses for delaying stoppages this must surely be be the case, as virtually daily we have 'updates' that are little more than excuses for not getting the job done.

Lock 24 DobcrossEarly January

It was in early January when the stoppage occurred at Dobcross Lock on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal with our Keith Gudgin telling of the broken cill and the first excuse for delay being the trust was 'preparing safe systems of work'.

T. Lang, referring to this stoppage, suggested that 'with the ever increasing excuses being churned-out these days, that Canal & River Trust must have an Excuse Department'.

He quoting the further two excuses that CaRT had 'now established a method of repair' and 'this requires careful planning to make sure we are working within Health & Safety legislation'.

A month later

Then over a month later, on the 14th February, the trust state that the delay 'is due to the continued repairs within the North West that is not allowing workers to be freed for the Huddersfield Narrow work', though we were not told what the work is.

Today, Thursday 17th, and the excuses keep rolling, with this time Our Keith reporting the trust telling 'teams continue to organise the equipment and materials needed ready to repair the damaged cill'.

And so it goes, one excuse after another—why not just get on with it?

British Waterways did!
