Memories of Bingley Five Rise wanted

Published: Monday, 07 March 2011

BRITISH Waterways is asking for people with old photographs of Bingley Five Rise Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, that they may have stored away, to share them.

For those interested in learning more about the locks and sharing their own thoughts, there's a two day consultation event planned at Bingley Market on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th March.

Activity plan

The request comes as part of the European Union funded Interreg IVB Waterways for Growth project, where British Waterways is looking at devising a new Activity Plan to look at a range of ways to improve the visitor appeal of the lock flight and North Bog site which neighbours the canal.

Any material provided by the public could then form part of any future activities to highlight the importance of the canal, with British Waterways stating that Bingley Five Rise attracts around 300,000 visits a year with approximately 2,600 boats passing through the locks each year.

Promote the waterways

Stephen Higham, Regeneration Manager for British Waterways, explained:

"British Waterways is keen to promote and develop the waterway network as a leisure, recreation and tourism resource. The project aims to engage with new and existing audiences through a programme of consultation, provide opportunities for people to have a greater say in future plans for the site and look to increase awareness of the cultural significance of the site."

Marion Blockley, Heritage Management Consultant for the Bingley project, commented:

"If anyone has any information from the bicentennial celebrations at Bingley Five Rise locks or the souvenir programme from the 1970s, I'd love it if they could bring it along. We hope to bring some added vitality to the lock flight and this public consultation is a great way to get local people involved in helping shape a new activity plan."
