Massive load by water

THE Ribble was used on Sunday to deliver a 270 tonnes transformer section to an electricity sub station.

The load was for the sub station at Penwortham Bridge in Preston, about a mile away from the river, where it was taken by low loader to the site, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Too heavy

The massive load was too heavy for the M6 motorway, so it was loaded on to a barge at Ellesmere Port, travelling around the coast to Preston on a barge, then lifted on to the low loader where it crawled very slowly a mile to the sub station, with the road closed to all other traffic.

Another section of the transformer will be transported on the 20th March.
