A DAMAGED WEIR HAS CAUSED a large section of the Montgomery Canal to have no water and described as a 'sea of mud'.

Lost almost all its water

This section of the Montgomery Canal is in Llanymynech and has lost almost all of its water as a damaged weir is preventing it getting the water it requires,  Janet Friend reports.

The Canal & River Trust confirmed that fish had died in the section but this was caused in part by the extreme weather this week.

The trust has now confirmed that additional action will be taken to attempt to repair the weir on the Tanat, as being the river with the damaged weir. Image by Ruairi Walsh.

The problem was that the river was unable to top-up the canal with water, owing to the damage.

Heartbreaking

A spokesperson for Glandŵr Cymru (the Canal & River Trust in Wales) told it is heartbreaking to see the impact the low water levels have had on wildlife in this section of the Montgomery Canal.

A local wildlife rescue organisation has been helping by relocating the swans that are being covered in mud to a safer section of the canal and a fisheries team has helping with rescuing the fish, as what is left of the water has little oxygen levels.
