ALL WHO HAVE CRUISED THE Trent & Mersey Canal through Stoke can hardly miss its incinerator.

StokeInidoratorjpgThat is now planned to be replaced, Janet Friend reports.

Coming to an end

The plant is coming to the end of its serviceable life so will be demolished and a new one erected in its place, and  being right by the side of the canal the work will have an effect upon navigation.

It is told that the plant will be replaced by a more efficient one that is being examined by the council.

It is claimed that this new energy recovery plant would power the equivalent of about 50,000 homes and would also generate a significant income which could be reinvested into local recycling and net zero schemes. Image by David Hines.

An increase

The new incinerator could handle about 230,000 to 290,000 tonnes of waste each year, which would be an increase of up to  38% on the current level.

There is to be a public consultation during March and April.
