THERE IS CONCERN over how long a hole in a bridge is taking to repair, blocking a main road to a village.
The hole was discovered by Canal & River Trust in Brewood Bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal, Janet Friend reports.
Main route into village
This is the main route into the village with residents expressing concern about how long it will take to repair and reopen, it already having been closed for two weeks.
The trust is at present carrying out a structural survey, with Severn Trent that owns the pipe, together with the council, maintaining it must be made safe before work can be carried out.
A spokesperson for Canal & River Trust told it was working with Severn Trent and Staffordshire County Council on how best to repair the 190 years old bridge and reopen it as quickly as possible, explaining:
Significant repairs are needed
"Early assessments indicate that significant repairs are needed, including work on the road surface and to the main water pipe.
"We thank residents for their patience and understanding during this time and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available."
A council spokesperson told it expected an update later this week after bridge inspections had taken place.
An extra problem is that the alternative road into Brewood, Kiddemore Green Road, is flooded, though the council is keeping it as clear as possible.
