THE TREND WITH REOPENING navigations is to give them a week then close.

The latest to be given this treatment is the Oxford Canal. Keith Gudgin reports.

banbury eventReopened this morning

With the 12 miles of the Oxford Canal being reopened at noon today the 27th October.

This will be from Claydon Top Lock 17 to Aynho Weir Lock 33, that includes Banbury, where there have been boaters stuck in their boats for months. The picture is of Banbury in better times.

Canal & River Trust maintain that it is planning to have the section open for just one week to see how the reservoirs cope, with the warning that if the water in the reservoirs drops suddenly it will mean a quick closure of the navigation.

As is usual in these circumstances, the trust advises boaters that they have a better chance of completing their journey, if they take advantage of the opening of the section in the first half of this week.

Further navigation will of course depend of the state of water in the reservoirs.
