Campaign for Trent bridge only gets one for walkers and cyclists

THERE HAS BEEN a long running campaign for a fourth road bridge over the Trent in Nottingham.

But it will not be as expected, Janet Friend reveals.

Walkers and cyclists only

For the new bridge will only be for walkers and cyclists, and not a road bridge that was campaigned for.

CliftonBridgeBuidingNottingham already has three road bridges crossing the river—Clifton Bridge, Trent Bridge and Lady Bay Bridge.

The latest one being Clifton Bridge that was opened in 1958.  The image shows it being constructed.

Though construction has started on the fourth bridge, that will connect Lady Bay to Trent Basin, it will only be for pedestrians and cyclists, though campaigners have been calling for decades for a new road bridge. This basin was supposed to be reserved for the use of freight using the Trent, that never came to fruition.

Closure of Clifton Bridge

It all came to a head in February 2020 when the closure of Clifton Bridge eastbound for emergency repairs meant journey times were lengthened by hours.

Nottinghamshire County Council confirm it will use part of a new £1 million fund to carry out a study looking into potential options for a fourth crossing.

It is stated that traffic volumes have increased by 12.5% over the past year alone with commuters and businesses facing daily delays, with HGVs being diverted through nearby villages causing further disruption.
