Canal & River Trust to rebuild burnt-out pumping station
THE PUMPING station at Linslade on the Grand Union Canal was destroyed by arson last July.
Canal & River Trust has applied for permission to rebuild it, Janet Friend reports.
Roof collapsed
The roof had collapsed into the store room and smaller pump room when the listed building was deliberately set alight.
The trust have approached Central Bedfordshire Council for Listed Building Consent to dismantle the fire-damaged remains and install new pump control systems. (Image by Canal & River Trust.)
The plans are to install the three phase switch gear and pump control systems above ground rather than below, as previously.
The work would also included the removal of the fire debris from the interior of the building, with Charlotte Wood, Canal & River Trust head of operations for London & South East explaining:
Be able to progress
"Once our contractors can safely access the building, we will then be able to progress to the next phase of work and prepare detailed plans for reinstating new pumps that are needed to provide water to the canal once again."
As yet there is no information as to when this will take place.
