Long delays with repairs
THE FAULT with the Kirkhouse Green Lift Bridge 4 on the New Junction Canal that failed on the 16th of this month cannot yet be repaired.
New Junction Canal
The fault with the Lift Bridge was told as being an hydraulic oil fault, with no further explanation given, Keith Gudgin reports.
But now the delay in its opening is that engineers have attended and parts for the bridge are required, which are on order. It is not explained how an hydraulic oil fault, can need parts or what they are.
Lancaster Canal
It was way back in July of last year that the navigation and towpath were closed due to structural failure at the Hollowforth Aqueduct 38 on the Lancaster Canal. The picture shows the dam allowing work on the aqueduct.
Though we have been informed by Canal & River Trust of various happenings to the structure every few weeks since, it alas is still not open to navigation.
Though we are often told that 'we have continued to make good progress'. And that the aqueduct wall, which collapsed during the canal breach, has been fully rebuilt, it has still taken six moths since the original collapse, and still no information regarding its reopening.
Peak Forest Canal
Another long stoppage was again on the Marple Flight, with this time a large hole appearing and damage to a culvert at Lock 14 on the flight of the Peak Forest Canal, on the 7th of November.
Navigation has been allowed on a weekly basis, and for the future it is on the Tuesday of each week of the 21st and 28th January, then on the 4th and 11th of February, with booking essential.
The trust plan to have the repairs completed by the 28th February.
The last long stoppage on the flight was on the 16th August 2023 that took ten months to repair to 14th June 2024!
