The former Bridgewater breach

REFERENCES to the former breach on the Bridgewater Canal were made when the waterway recently breached.

BridgewaterBreachLymn Heritage Centre has released the actual photograph by Ken Fisher of the breach that occurred 1971, Janet Friend reports.

This happened on New Years Day of that year at Dunham Massey near Warrington with the flood from the deep and wide commercial waterway flooding homes in the town.

It also caused much destruction such was its impact over a wide area.

As the waterway was then taking ships from the port at Preston Brook to Manchester, it was essential the breach be repaired quickly, with so much finance being at stake, especially as cargo boats were left stranded and others unable to make passage.
