Nene bridge moves a step closer to being built
THE BRIDGE for walkers and cyclists over the Nene moves a step closer to being built.
Peterborough City Council hopes a new bridge over the river in Peterborough will ease pressure on city centre traffic routes, Janet Friend reports.
This is after a senior council officer has now approved the £6.3 million 'Cygnet Bridge' project. The image by Peterborough City Council is an artist's impression.
Could begin in three years
The aim of the project is to link the Fletton Quays development on one side of the river to the Embankment on the other side. It is expected that building could start within three years.
The 311ft bridge will form part of the city's green wheel and provide 'a sustainable travel connection linking a university campus, the city centre and the cathedral'. It will not affect the navigation on the Nene.
The planning application was submitted during the summer of 2024.
However though the council's executive director of place and economy, had approved the project, planning committees, made up of elected members, often consider planning applications.
