THERE has been progress on the work to plug the sink hole on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
The hole between Crabtree Swing Bridge and New Lane Swing Bridge at Burscough appeared on the 19th of July closing the waterway.
We are told that work is progressing well with a five metre wide clay strip laid over the centre line of the culvert across the width of the canal bed.
120 tons of clay
Approximately 120 tons of clay have been laid that resulted in the same amount of spoil having to be excavated and moved around the bed whilst work was undertaken.
It was intended to spread the excavated spoil and silt with the machine. However, the machine reach is limited due to its position and there is a high voltage line running overhead preventing its operation.
