THE shortage of water has closed the six broad locks on the Trent & Mersey.
This means the locks from Derwent Mouth to Stenson are out of use since yesterday, Wednesday, Keith Gudgin reports.
Water control
Canal & River Trust tell that its teams are carrying out water control and the closure of the lock will help them to manage the levels.
The stoppage notice tells that boaters are kindly asked to avoid travelling along the rest of the Trent & Mersey where possible, to minimise the levels from dropping further. Yet the feed is from the Trent at Alrewas and has no effect on the miles to Liverpool...
We cruised
We actually cruised up the six locks on Tuesday and noticed the very low water level, our being caught on the submerged stones that boaters are warned of, but just enough water to get through.
Most of the six locks leak very badly, and though river fed, it cannot cope with the extreme leakage.
