People in caravan parks, marinas, those living off-grid, to get £400 one-off payment for energy discount, writes Kelvin Alexander-Duggan.

The government has announced this new help today, which includes a one-off payment for people in caravan parks, marinas, those living off-grid, and tenants who pay rent with 'bills included', is set to help out people who 'fell through the cracks' for other reasons.

Previously announced

Rishi Sunak previously announced a £400 discount on energy bills between October and March for all UK households with a domestic electricity account, and on 8th September Liz Truss announced energy cap of £2,500 for two years.

However, the new help announced today will target groups who will not be helped by either of these promises. People in caravan parks or on marinas, legal lineside long term moorings will now be given a £400 one-off payment, if they weren’t eligible for the £400 discount already.

Rely on bottled gas

People who live off the gas grid, relying on heating oil or bottled gas, will get an extra £100 one-off payment on top of the £400 electricity bills discount. There will also be new legislation brought in to ensure landlords pass on the £400 discount to tenants who pay their rent with 'bills included'.

Additional funding will be made available so that £400 payments will be extended to include people such as park home, marina residents and those tenants whose landlords pay for their energy via a commercial contract.

So far however, the government has not announced how the plans are set to work in practice, how people will get or apply for the £400 or £100 payments, whether they will be available for 1st October, or when the law will change for landlords. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy stated:

Receive the same support

“The government is committed to ensuring such households receive the same support.”

The NBTA may still be upset as a land address will be required to prevent fraud.
