THE damage caused by last year's Boxing Day floods has now been completely repaired, with the canal now re-opened.
The floods caused a great deal of damage to the waterway, especially its structures, that were badly damaged, and though still not completely repaired, the waterway is fully open once again, Keith Gudgin tells us.
Clear debris
A great deal of work was first needed to clear the debris left by the floods, that included sunken boats, but one of the main problems was the rebuilding of Elland Bridge (pictured) over the Calder & Hebble Navigation, giving access to the Rochdale. Its foundations were so badly damaged, that the bridge had to be taken down and rebuilt, with concrete inside its arches to make it able to withstand any future floods, and that took many months
