TODAY, Thursday, the body of a man was pulled from the Portland Basin in Manchester.
This time it is away from the usual scene of such deaths (the Rochdale Nine locks in the city) but at the junction of the Ashton, Huddersfield Narrow and Peak Forest canals, Keith Gudgin tells us.
29 'unexplained'
However, this brings the total to 85 dead bodies dragged from the waterways of the city in the last seven years, but what is so disturbing is that the police admit that 29 of the deaths are 'unexplained'. This recent one also so far being 'unexplained'.
There are of course concerns that the person now dubbed the Canal Pusher is once again responsible, with fears he has claimed his 29th victim.
Specialist diving unit
It was the emergency services that rushed to the scene after being alerted that what looked like a body was seen floating near the surface of Portland Basin, with a specialist diving unit pulling the corpse to the bank.
Details so far released are that it is the body of a man, white and understood to be in his 40s or 50s.
Families of those unexplained deaths in the canals are desperate for information, believing that the deaths are indeed caused by a psychopath.
