IT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED that the restoration of the Lichfield & Hatherton canal restoration requires much work as it crosses both the A38 and a railway.

So tells the New Civil Engineer, Janet Friend reports.

New infrastructure

The restoration of the Lichfield & Hatherton Canal will require new infrastructure beneath a road and a railway line, as work is required to reinstate the route that will eventually connect the  Wyrley & Essington Canal with the Staffs & Worcs Canal.

There have been challenges in the restoration of this link, one being having to construct an aqueduct, crossing the M6 Toll Motorway, pictured.

The link was abandoned in the 1950s, and sections have since either been filled in or lost to development, but is slowly being restored.

Sections in water

Already there are several sections that are in water, but there is yet to be installed two separate box culverts, one below the Lichfield to Birmingham railway line and the under the A38.

This has been approved by National Highways, though subject to design and technical approval.
