A LADY who had her home flooded when the defences failed in Cumbria gave the Environmental Agency some very good advice.

She told a television reporter that the Agency should stop wasting its money on such stupid schemes as fresh water mussels and spend it instead on what it should—flood defences.

Allowed to flood

A man added that spending money on wildlife is taking over, whilst homes are allowed to flood, and which is more important? The wildlife is just that, wild, and able to look after itself, whilst people and homes are at the mercy of the Environment Agency, that is too interested in other things.

Perhaps good advice for Canal & River Trust too, that is forgetting its prime purpose of keeping its waterways in good condition rather than too spending on silly wildlife schemes.  A good example is when maintenance is completely stopped or restoration halted because someone saw a newt! And we all know about the hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on bank burrowing water voles.
