WORK to replace the lower gates at Lock 18 at Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir has now been completed by volunteers, ensuring that the navigable stretch of the Grantham Canal from the A1 to Woolsthorpe can be further extended by nearly a mile.

It also means that the other locks at Woolsthorpe can now be used, with the work made possible by the Grantham Canal Society which has raised over £30,000 to fund the cost of the new gates.

Appeal

Mike Stone, Chairman of the Society enthused:

"This has been an amazing achievement and support has come from the many people and organisations that responded to our appeal. The importance of this cooperation and support for the project cannot be overstated. Without it the society would have struggled to complete this phase of restoration of the canal."

The picture below shows the volunteers in front of one of the new 2.5 ton lock gates just before it was placed in position in the lock. A donation of £2,000 is being handed over to the Society by the Chairman of Lincolnshire branch of the Inland Waterways Association, Dave Carnell. Photographs by R. Poore.
