Slough Bridge removed

THE collapsed Reeds Bridge on the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal that closed the Arm has now been removed.

The bridge collapsed way back in late April, (Slough Arm closed) and it was told that it would take until June before it could be repaired, meaning that many boats were stranded at the moorings, though they had had the opportunity to have boats craned out at the time.

Worse condition

But as investigation found the bridge supports were in worse condition than at first thought, it was decided to remove the crumbling pillars so that the waterway could be reopened, allowing the stranded boats to move.

This has now been completed, with the bridge removed completely as the accompanying photograph shows, with our being told that replacing it will now become a longer term project.

It is expected that a new bridge will be constructed during winter months when the Arm has little traffic.
