Bullying tactics

THE report that Canal & River Trust wants George's, at lock 15 on the Audlem Flight on the Shroppie, to close immediately, has brought memories back of an incident on our six months cruise on the canal network this year, writes Peter Ponting.

Whilst on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, we unfortunately stopped at Rose Grove for a self pump-out and water.

Full of rubbish

After clearing our prop twice from debris approaching the CaRT station, we found the pump-out service box full of rubbish. It also had stated on the pump out unit, that a pump out was 30 units instead of the normal 25 units. After complaining to CaRT, we were informed it would be cleared and we only needed a normal 25 units card to use the pump out.

On returning a week later, once again clearing our prop, the pump-out station was still full of rubbish, nothing had changed. Although the pump out did work on a 25 units card.

No comparison

Now comparing the facilities at Rose Grove to the welcoming site of George's is no comparison. Apart from George's being opposite the towpath, I see no reason why CaRT can make such a demand.

The bullying tactics of CaRT against individuals trying to help the network, show the way forward for the people of CaRT.

Own house in order

Perhaps if they look at their own facilities first, the breaches, the failed donation appeal, the lack of trust from boaters.

Then perhaps and only perhaps, the committee at CaRT, at their next meeting, may discuss real issues.
