More Caen Hill fish go

ONCE again fish have been removed from Caen Hill Flight on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Devizes as they are eating damsel flies and aquatic plants.

Over half a ton of fish have been removed by British Waterways from the flight and dumped in a Peak District reservoir, the second time in two years.

Carp and pike

The fish were removed as British Waterways was concerned at the amount of younger fish and wildlife being eaten, and screens have been installed to protect the wildlife.

Ecologist Oda Dijksterhuis explained:

"In 2009 we removed the first batch of big fish from the ponds and installed silt screen curtains. The results of this habitat management work have been fantastic, with aquatic plants, such as the rare potamogetons and hornworts, returning to the ponds that we haven't had in the waterway for years."

However, local anglers are far from happy at the carp being removed from the side ponds, with a great deal of controversy in the local press.
