BOATING THROUGH REDHILL LOCK at the bottom of the Soar can be seen the Radcliffe Power Station.
That is a well known landmark for boaters either on the Soar or the Trent, but it will soon be no more, Janet Friend reports.
Generating 35 years
Closed down in September 2024 after 35 years generating power its cooling towers are now due for demolition after Rushcliffe Borough Council approved plans to demolish everything with controlled explosives.
The plans show that it will take five years to clear the site, that will include the cooling towers, the main power station building and other buildings on site.
According to plans, it will take until at least 2030 to demolish and clear the 273 acres site, that is to possibly become a new zero-carbon manufacturing and technology location, which will be part of the East Midlands Freeport.
Affect airport
However, the demolition could effect East Midlands Airport that is just over two miles away, as it will create a great deal of dust and could disrupt the airport if not timed carefully, so looks like being demolished in the middle of the night when there is no air traffic, that could be somewhat dangerous!
