Another boat lift

PLANS have been revealed to build a boat lift similar to the Falkirk Wheel to connect the derelict Newport Canal with the Shropshire Union Canal.

There is a difference of 73ft between the two waterways, originally overcome by a flight of 17 locks, but it is thought a boat lift as part of the £23 millions plan would 'attract more than 250,000 visitors a year'.

The plans would see a boat lift built linking the two waterways between Norbury Junction (pictured)  and Forton Bridge.

More from the Department of Optimistic Statistics?

More statistics include bringing an estimated £7 millions to the area each year, creating more than 200 indirect jobs and 50 jobs for on-site operations.

The report reveals:

'The means of re-connecting the Newport Canal to the Shropshire Union Canal is probably the most significant decision in the whole restoration of the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals network.  The scheme provides for a modern engineering structure to lift boats between the two canals, restoration of locks together with significant tourism development in terms of visitor centres and educational facilities at Norbury Junction and Shelmore.

'An alternative solution is to adopt Thomas Telford's design, restoring the original flight of 17 locks. Although cheaper it poses threats of 'considerable water and energy loss'.

The plans also include the possibility of an inclined plane.
