A CAR that is stated as being driven too fast around a bend crashed into the canal that skirts the weir on the Avon in Bristol, with the car sinking and the two men inside drowning.

This is where Short Street joins Feeder Road and  looks as if the car was travelling along Short Street and failed to stop or turn at the end, crashing through a barrier into the river below Netham Lock, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Formal identification

The bodies have been removed by divers and the car is in the process of also being removed, with a police spokesman stating there were just the two men inside, with their formal identification now taking place. (Picture by courtesy of Bristol Post.)

Roads around the area were closed, with first reports stating that 40 emergency vehicles attended, though this figure is disputed.
