WITH its water levels now low, work has started on clearing-up the debris left in the Calder & Hebble Navigation after the floods.

First of all the survey has started which will ascertain which parts of the waterway can be safely opened, Keith Gudgin tells us.

First section to open

Local boaters are assisting with the work, with the first section to be opened being that between Sowerby Bridge and Salterhebble locks.

Canal & River Trust is carrying out surveys of further sections and is hopeful that other sections of the canal will be able to safely reopen, depending on the amount of debris and silt that has been left.
