THE IWA Waterway Recovery Group carried out restoration work on the iconic Grade II listed Lady Capel's Bridge that spans the Grand Union Canal in Watford in the run up to and during the Waterways Festival.

The restoration works took place last Saturday 13th July and will continue over the weekend from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July, involving up to 15 volunteers, all of whom are skilled in heritage restoration and bricklaying.

In need of repair

The historic bridge was in desperate need of repair and repainting, with a team from the Waterway Recovery Group volunteers working to restore the bridge.

The four days of works will included re-pointing and repairing damaged brickwork as well as repainting the bridge in a white, 'breathable' paint to restore it back to its former glory.

Public invited

Members of the public were invited to come along to find out more about the works, chat to volunteers from Waterway Recovery Group and staff from the CaRT, and learn more about the restoration work and history of the bridge.

Jenny Black from the IWA's Waterway Recovery Group explains:

"We are really pleased that we can help restore this iconic bridge as part of The Inland Waterway Association's national festival celebration.

"This is the second time we have worked with the Canal & River Trust on a bridge restoration and this is a great project for us to demonstrate the work we carry out as volunteer organisations."
