Volunteer works at Chester

THE Small Tasks Team Volunteers group of volunteers had a useful day working in Chester to improve the visitor mooring arrangements at Cow Lane Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal.

The work on Thursday, 21st March was carried out in conjunction with Canal & River Trust and members of the Chester Canal Heritage Trust (CCHT), writes Richard Hall.

Mooring rings

Additional mooring rings were installed to compensate for the existing ones being spaced too widely apart, signage for the moorings was installed and two obsolete bollards opposite to the winding hole were removed.

In addition two rotten seats adjacent to the canal, belonging to Chester City Council, were renovated so that they are now useable. Some of the volunteers are pictured testing one!

As part of the same overall project the CCHT will shortly be putting signage at the site to indicate the pathway from the towpath to the nearby city centre.

Stopped to read

Whilst working at the site the volunteers were impressed by the number of people who stopped to read the interpretation board alongside the towpath, one of three in the area which had been provided by the CCHT with funding from local councillors.

The group were very fortunate in getting their work done without interference from the weather. Shropshire Union Canal Society have been less fortunate with their planned work party on the Llangollen Canal from Hurleston which was scheduled for 23rd to 27th March. Due to the heavy snowfall the start has now been postponed until Monday, 25th March in the hope that three full days can be achieved.
