Collapsed culvert causes flooding

FOR the second time in just over a week Wigan streets have been flooded due to a blocked culvert under the Leeds & Liverpool Canal causing water to back up and flood.

Two streets were flooded earlier this week for the second time, and with the constant rain, flooding is expected again as the blocked culvert is not being attended to, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Lack of maintenance

Lack of maintenance seems to be the problem as it is not known if the culvert and pipe, owned by CART, has collapsed or is just blocked.

A spokesman told the residents and Wigan Council that the problem is being investigated.

Risen to the doors

In both instances of the flooding, the fire brigade was called out to pump away the water that had risen to the doors of the properties in the two streets.

The town's emergency flood plan included installing water proof storm doors on all houses and providing sandbags for the residents.
