Spitfire to open event

Published: Friday, 25 May 2012

IT WILL be a most unusual opening to the Stroud on Water Festival—the flypast of a World War II Spitfire.

The flypast, at 12.05pm on Saturday 2nd June heralds the start of Stroud District's main Jubilee event, a three day festival, which is taking place at Marling School.

Being dredged

The canal at Dudbridge and Marling School is currently being dredged to accommodate the boats expected for the Stroud on Water Festival. Up to 40 boats will be present from steam boats, trail  boats and trip boats to make a unique scene along the canal.

This will be the first time for 80 years that boats have been seen at this site. 3.5 miles of canal are now available for navigation, and the opportunity to boat along some of it, plus if you're lucky a trip through the Ryeford double locks.

Sold out

The Stroud on Water Festival reports that it has sold all its Trader bookings for the show, the music programme is complete with music all day each day of the show culminating in Meat on the Ledge on Monday night.

The three day Festival will conclude with a Jubilee Firework display on the Monday night, sponsored by Stroud District Council and set to patriotic music.

Ian Edwards, Canal Project Manager at Stroud District Council enthused:

"This Festival will showcase the canal for the first time. It is a wonderful facility which can only be improved as more canal is opened up."
